Helocrene springs

Helocrene spring, Coorg, southern India

Springs can have a very particular fauna (including subterranean species), and there are more than one type of them. Unlike "true" springs, helocrene spring does not have a sharply defined source; the water rather runs from a larger ground patch. Such places are an interesting hunting ground, although the water discharge may be so low that even the tea strainer cannot be used. The collecting then becomes an exercise of endless patience, since one has to turn rund and examine every single wet leaf and piece of bark. In the place on the photograph, I found some Hydraena and the arguably smallest Microdytes (total length ca 1.2 mm) that way.
